How to Clear and Moisturize Dry Skin in Winter Months

How to Clear and Moisturize Dry Skin in Winter Months - Freegirl Skincare

If you're living in a winter climate, there's a lot to love!

From skiing in the mountains or sitting by a fireside to soaking after a long day out, sometimes we forget that dry, cold air is taking a toll on our skin!

But there's nothing worse than waking up on a blustery day to a dry patch on your skin.

The first place to start is to get a great moisturizer — your number one goal is to help your body moisturize and retain moisture more effectively! But when you want to prevent or clear up dry winter skin, there’s a few things you can do to help.

From the quality of your skin care routine to how you apply your creams and serums, you can set yourself up for glowing skin, regardless of the time of year.

Here are 5 steps to regaining moisture in your skin throughout the winter weather!

Be conscious of water and humidity.

Remember to drink more water as well as control the humidity and indoor heat in your surroundings, as much as you can.

Carry a metal or glass water bottle with you throughout the day so hydration remains at the top of your list!

While it’s hard not to crank up the heat, keep a moderate temperature in your home. You can also set up a humidifier in your living spaces and bedroom to address the humidity.

Limit your warm showers to 5-10 minutes. While that hot water may feel great on cold skin, overdoing it will always leave your skin thirstier than when you stepped in.

Once you step out of the shower, use a full-body moisturizer as soon as possible to seal in your skin. And head over to the sink to get your skincare routine on your face as quickly as possible!

Get fragrance free cleansers and moisturizers.

Steer clear of deodorant body washes, perfumed soaps, and alcohol products, which can strip away natural oils. While mineral oils and petroleum jelly seem to promise immediate relief, without strict regulations on how effectively the petroleum-based products are extracted, we can’t know if they are truly free from carcinogens.

Look for all artificial fragrance free and toxin-free ingredients that can seal in moisture, like Rose, Calendula, Lavender, and Chamomile. These natural ingredients provide active healing properties to moisturize and reduce irritation.

Added bonus: To further boost your regenerative properties, be sure to be eating root vegetables, bone broth, some soy-based foods, citruses, and your leafy greens as they all help your body produce hyaluronic acid naturally!

Regain moisture with raw milk cleansers.

Our favorite moisturizing base is a milk or cream cleanser because it removes the oils that your skin doesn’t need and leaves the essential oils that it does. Containing lactic acid, a form of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), the milk bases help to remove skin cells and stimulate new cell growth. Milk Cleansers are an excellent source of Vitamins A, D, E and K for your skin!

These cleansers bring in a soft, luxurious feel — our toxin-free cleansers can be left on the face for 15 minutes as a moisturizing treatment every day if so desired.

Exfoliate 3-4 times a week.

Exfoliating 3-4 times a week creates a significantly healthy glow while toning the skin and preparing your skin to better absorb nourishing serums, moisturizers, and eye cream.

The skin’s top layer, called the epidermis, is always turning over, replacing the complete layer once every month! When you clear your skin, your face is able to take in all the extra benefits of serums and moisturizers.

Our Ambitious AHA gel mask is a great exfoliant! Gentle on skin, you can leave it on overnight. This unique combination of Vitamin C, plant acids, and Pineapple and Papaya enzymes allows you to exfoliate without scrubbing or damaging the skin.

Layer moisturizing products.

We recommend layering moisturizing products after using a moisturizing cleanser. Serums and moisturizers have varying benefits and can provide extra protection against the elements!

Serums nourish the skin with healing properties of nutrient-rich plant extracts to help improve the look of scar tissue, fine lines, and sun-exposed skin. Opt for a Vitamin C formula that can help get rid of unwanted wrinkles and scars as well as deeply nourish your skin. Wait 30 seconds after applying serum, then apply moisturizers.

Our moisturizers never contain alcohol or harsh chemicals that dry out skin and strip away oils. We recommend you only use formulas that consist of high quality ingredients including essential oils, organic and wild crafted herbs and herbal infusions, food grade vegetable oils and butters and pure vitalized water.

You should apply your moisturizer after your serums, both morning and night to help heal your dry skin! Be sure that the moisturizer is a cream based — our True moisture crème adds in botanicals like Carrot and Comfrey which protect against free radicals and help to regenerate your skin!
